Jason Steeg, the owner of Honey Butter’s Kitchen, described Williamsburg as a “breakfast town” and said any restaurant that can provide a decent breakfast will be successful in the area.

It was that thought process that led Steeg to open the first location of Honey Butter’s Kitchen, a restaurant that serves American cuisine and specializes in country breakfast foods, in 2011 at the Monticello Marketplace.

After a successful four years in the busy Monticello Avenue corridor, Steeg opened the second Honey Butter’s Kitchen location Nov. 17 at 7521 Richmond Road, near the intersection with Croaker Road in the shopping center where the Candle Factory used to operate.

Steeg identified a hole in the breakfast scene near Toano and purchased a building that housed the now-defunct Candle Light Kitchen.

“I noticed this location and there was not a lot to eat out here,” Steeg said. “I really felt like what I had to offer would do really well out here.”

Given the first two weekends of business at the new Honey Butter’s Kitchen, it appears Steeg’s instincts were correct about the need for more breakfast locations near Toano.

The new Honey Butter’s Kitchen location was at full capacity through its first full weekend, which provided some challenges to the new kitchen and wait staff.

“All of the little things that you might imagine happening on the first busy weekend happened,” Steeg joked, mentioning longer than anticipated wait times for customers. “Last weekend went smoother and I imagine every weekend moving forward will go smoother.”

While Steeg said weekend breakfast is expected to carry the restaurant, he hopes more customers will look toward the restaurant as more than a place to get a quality country-style breakfast. With full lunch and dinner menus also available, which includes a selection of beer and wine, Steeg believes Honey Butter’s Kitchen is set up to be a go-to option for any meal.

“I’m hoping and thinking we will do pretty well,” he said. “Breakfast is strong, lunch is really strong and we will be drumming up our dinner to draw more business.”
