Incumbent Del. Monty Mason will succeed in holding the 93rd District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates for a second term, as he has defeated challenger Lara Overy by more than 1,558 votes in the general election, according to unofficial election results.

Vote totals from the Virginia Department of Elections show Mason (D) leads the ballot count with 8,903 votes, or 54.71 percent, as of 8:45 p.m. Overy, a Republican, has earned 7,345 votes, or 45.41 percent.

All election results are considered unofficial until a formal results review, which begins tomorrow, is completed and all provisional ballots are counted.

Mason celebrated his victory at Corner Pocket in New Town.

“It’s such a humbling experience. I’m just going to continue to do this as well as I can,” Mason said. “There is a learning curve with this job, and there’s only so much you can do in two years, but I tried to work as hard as I can. And starting tomorrow, I will continue to work.”

He said his focus in the next session will be “veterans’ issues and education, education, education.”

Mason also emphasized the importance of promoting Jefferson Lab’s work on the ion collider as important to the entire commonwealth rather than the Peninsula alone.

The 93rd District includes the City of Williamsburg, parts of James City and York counties and part of Newport News.

Mason was first elected to the 93rd District seat in 2013 after narrowly defeating incumbent Del. Michael Watson. In his second term, Mason said he would focus on finding funding to complete the Interstate 64 widening project, expanding train service to Newport News and providing bus service to Lackey Clinic in York County.

Both candidates ran aggressive campaigns and addressed the content of attack ads during a forum Oct. 29.

Campaign finance information reported by the Virginia Public Access Project show that, as of Oct. 22, Mason raised $695,639 in campaign contributions, which include $12,793 raised before Jan. 1, 2014 and all subsequent donations. Overy raised $683,477 in campaign contributions in 2015 alone, according to VPAP.
