A local restaurateur is buying residential property from York County.
The county’s Board of Supervisors signed off on the sale of .24 acres of land at 208 Bacon St. to Mario Buffa for $257,500 on Tuesday after no speakers came forward for the public hearing. The supervisors voted 4-0 – with Supervisor Sheila Noll (District 2) absent – in favor of the sale.
The latest assessment of the land puts its value at $202,000.
“We got a good offer,” County Administrator Neil Morgan said. “It’s probably a good sign for the residential real estate values.”
In a memo to the board recommending the sale, Morgan said the county had no plans to use the lot and argued its best use would be for residential purposes.
York County owned the parcel, which sits hundreds of feet from the Yorktown Monument on Main Street, after a land exchange with the National Park Service in 2003.
The supervisors recently asked the county to solicit bids for Bacon Street property. Buffa, who will pay in cash at closing, submitted the highest of the three bids.
A call to Buffa for comment on the purchase was not returned before this article’s publication.
Buffa owns several restaurants in York County, including two at Riverwalk Landing on Water Street – less than a mile from the Bacon Street property in Historic Yorktown.
The Bacon Street property is zoned for residential use only.
