Incumbent Stonehouse Supervisor Jim Kennedy has filed with the James City County Registrar’s Office to run for re-election in November as an independent.
He is the second candidate to file for the Stonehouse seat after Republican Sue Sadler. He has served on the board from 2000 to 2003 and from 2008 to the present. He was also on the planning commission from 2005 to 2007.
Kennedy did not return a call from WYDaily on Friday.
The deadline for independent candidates to announce campaigns is Tuesday. Kennedy said Thursday he “may be putting his name on the ballot to give people an option.”
He said every race should have at least two choices on the ballot and he had not yet finalized his application for the seat.
The registrar’s office confirmed Friday that Kennedy has finalized his application and his name will appear on the ballot.
Kennedy, who last run as a Republican but has since left the party, will square off against Sadler in November’s election. Sadler is a frequent speaker at board of supervisors meetings, who said she wants to fight for a “smaller, more accountable government” and to “stand up against” tax increases.
Heath Richardson, a member of the county’s planning commission, had announced a Republican run for the seat in February. He ended his campaign a few days after it began when he learned he was ineligible to run due to his status as a federal employee.
The election is set for Nov. 3.
