A man driving a van reportedly stolen out of Norfolk is suffering from serious injuries after he crashed near the intersection of John Tyler Highway and Centerville Road on Wednesday afternoon, shutting down the area for six-and-a-half hours.

Deputy Chief Steve Rubino with the James City County Police Department said the driver — who is not being named at this time — was driving a GMC van from Norfolk at a high rate of speed when he went around a corner, clipped some trees and landed in a wooded area.

Officers and medical personnel responded to the 3500 block of John Tyler Highway at around 1:45 p.m. and found the driver suffering from serious injuries.

The driver was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News for surgery, Rubino said.

John Tyler Highway was shut down from Greensprings Plantation Road to Centerville Road while emergency responders and investigators were at the scene.
