Police say alcohol, weather conditions and speed were not factors in a vehicle crash that killed a 52-year-old man who was walking across Merrimac Trail on Thursday night.

The man has been identified as Frank Williams Evans from James City County.

Evans was walking from the 7-Eleven on Merrimac Trail to Cambridge Apartments when he was struck by Ford F-150 pickup heading east at around 9 p.m., said Deputy Chief Steve Rubino, a spokesperson with the James City County Police Department.

The 22-year-old Newport News man driving the pickup said he did not see Evans crossing the street “until it was too late,” Rubino said in a news release.

Police said Evans was wearing all dark clothing when he was hit. He was taken to Riverside Doctors’ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver was not injured during the crash.

The crash remains under investigation. Rubino said the driver of the pickup truck will not be charged.
