Quarles Resigns from Williamsburg Planning Commission

City of Williamsburg logoThe City of Williamsburg is accepting applications for the city’s Planning Commission after a member resigned in February.

Dan Quarles submitted his resignation from the Commission Feb. 23. Quarles had been reappointed to the Planning Commission in December for a term running through Dec. 31, 2018.

Quarles, who is a partner with the law firm Otey Smith & Quarles, said his schedule became too busy to continue serving on the Planning Commission.

“My hands were pretty full with the law practice,” he said. “I figured it was time to let some other person take the reins for a while.”

Quarles said he had been considering leaving the Planning Commission but did not decide to resign until early this year.

He had served on the Planning Commission since 2011, and previously served one term on the Williamsburg Architectural Review Board.

The city is currently accepting applications for the Planning Commission seat vacated by Quarles.

Planning Commission members are limited to serving two full four-year terms, and must be approved by the City Council.

Because Quarles’ term is in progress, the next appointee would still be eligible to serve two full terms on the Planning Commission after the current term is completed.

City Spokeswoman Lee Ann Hartmann said the City Council could approve an appointee at its April meeting, and hoped to have someone in place by May.

Applications are due by March 20 and are available online.
