A Walmart operations manager is hoping to represent the Edgehill, Yorktown and Seaford areas of York County as a supervisor.
Chris Mollenkamp, who serves as president of the York County Historical Committee, announced his Republican candidacy for District 3 of the York County Board of Supervisors in a news release Tuesday.
The district is currently represented by Supervisor Don Wiggins, who was originally elected to the board in 1999. Wiggins lost the next election in 2003 when he ran as an independent and was voted back to the board in 2007 and 2011.
Wiggins has not announced whether he will be running for another term.
In his news release, Mollenkamp said he would focus on having an open and ongoing dialogue with constituents. He said he would hold quarterly meetings to receive input from citizen and update them on county government.
“York County is a great place to live, and I know that the right leadership in our local government can make a positive difference for our residents,” Mollenkamp said. “We need leaders who are committed to providing responsive and reliable government.”
An operations manager for the Walmart Import Distribution Center in James City County, Mollenkamp is also a member of the York County Board of Equalization, which considers property owners’ applications for the purpose of equalizing assessments.
The father of four children said he wants to focus on maintaining a “high quality of life and a great educational system that supports our current population and creates the foundation for an even more successful future for York County and its people.”
He is also a member of the executive board of Abukloi Inc., which operates a high school in South Sudan, and serves as the Walmart liaison to the Newport News branch of An Achievable Dream.
If Wiggins or another Republican announces his or her candidacy, a primary will be held for the district June 9. If Mollenkamp runs unopposed in the Republican Party, his name will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot.
