Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency for the Virginia on Monday afternoon, allowing state agencies to assist local governments in responding to the winter storm.
“This storm could bring difficult travel and widespread power outages for the next few days,” McAuliffe said in a news release.
Additional crews, officers and emergency officials from the Virginia Emergency Operations Center, the Virginia National Guard and the Virginia State Police are on shift and standing by to respond to road conditions, crashes and disabled motorists.
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management is also coordinating conference calls between the National Weather Service, state agencies and local governments.
The National Weather Service’s latest report calls for 6 to 10 inches of snow to fall in Williamsburg overnight, with the first snowflakes already covering the Peninsula.
A winter weather warning has been issued in the Historic Triangle for 7 p.m. today through noon Tuesday, with temperatures expected to drop to 19 degrees overnight.
A mixture of snow and sleet is expected to fall between 2 and 4 a.m. Tuesday.
Emergency officials have provided tips for citizens to be safe during the storm that include equipping vehicles with food and first aid kits, as well as slowing down near snow removal equipment vehicles.
