A Republican businessman announced Sunday he is running for a spot on the York County Board of Supervisors.

Jeff Wassmer, the chief executive officer of Spectrum, a Newport News-based company that provides solutions for the Department of Defense and other federal agencies, will run as a Republican in District 4.

Vice Chairman George Hrichak is the current supervisor for District 4, which encompasses Grafton, Dare and Harwood’s Mill in the lower part of the county. Hrichak joined the board in 2007 and has not yet announced whether he will run for another term.

Wassmer said he wants to focus on quality of life, fiscal accountability and a respectful and responsive government.

“Our natural resources, unique history and engaged citizens are hallmarks of the county,” he said in a news release. “My vision is to ensure this way of life continues. That means making the challenging decisions that balance accountability of taxpayer dollars with protecting and enhancing our way of life.”

A father of three children, Wassmer spent 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and started Spectrum in 1999.

As CEO, he transformed the business of three employees into more than 340 and has more than 20 years of experience in network security and program management.

He currently serves as Council President for the Colonial Virginia Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and serves on boards for An Achievable Dream, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula, the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, Peninsula NOW, LEAD Virginia and the Young Presidents Organization Virginia Chapter.

Wassmer has planned a kickoff celebration for his campaign at 5 p.m. March 11 at the Riverwalk Restaurant in Riverwalk Landing, where he will be joined by former Gov. George Allen.

Wassmer will face off against any other Republican candidates who come forward in the party’s primary June 9. If he wins the primary or no Republican opposes him, his name will appear on ballots in the general election Nov. 3.
