The College of William & Mary is receiving high marks for its international relations programs.
Foreign Policy magazine included William & Mary’s Institute for the Theory and Practice of International Relations in its annual Ivory Tower Index, a ranking of the top undergraduate and graduate programs for international relations worldwide.
The Index ranked the college’s undergraduate international relations program as the 18th-best in the country — William & Mary’s first appearance on the list since its creation in 2006.
The college’s ranking is the highest for any school in Virginia; the University of Virginia’s undergraduate international relations program came in at 22nd.
Harvard University claimed the top spots for undergraduate and doctoral programs, while Georgetown University was ranked first for master’s programs.
The rankings were one part of the 2014 Ivory Tower survey, which provides how international relations scholars view the world and how universities are preparing students in the field. The survey is jointly sponsored by Foreign Policy and William & Mary’s Teaching, Research and International Policy project.
The 2014 survey included responses from 1,615 scholars at 1,375 American universities.
The Teaching, Research and International Policy project also issues “snap polls” on international events to provide policy makers with “real-time” information on unfolding situations. The polls survey academics at American universities affiliated with political science departments or public policy schools, and who teach or conduct research on issues that cross international borders.
“The TRIP Project, which conducted this survey of international relations experts, is an excellent example of the type of student-faculty collaborative research that William & Mary is known for,” said Susan Peterson, a William & Mary government and international relations professor.
