Cast and crew from the AMC original series TURN: Washington’s Spies will return to Colonial Williamsburg on Monday to film scenes at the Governor’s Palace and the Palace Green for the show’s upcoming second season.
The latest round of filming comes almost four months after the show first filmed in Williamsburg at the Governor’s Palace and at the Christopher Wren Building at the College of William & Mary. A few weeks later, more shots were filmed at Colonial Williamsburg at landmarks including the palace, Market Square and The Magazine.
The Historic Area will remain open during Monday’s filming, and guests are welcome to watch the production. Anyone in the area should expect production activity around Governor’s Palace and the Palace Green all day. The palace will be open for tours from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The show is set during the Revolutionary War and follows a circle of friends in British-occupied Long Island who join together in a group and relay valuable information to the Continental Army. It is based off a book by Alexander Rose called “Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring.”
“The stories of America’s founding are richer and more intriguing than many realize. Ordinary people like Abraham Woodhull [the show’s protagonist] risked it all for a shot at freedom and in so doing changed the course of history,” Mitchell B. Reiss, president and CEO of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, said in a news release. “It’s a quintessentially American story. We’re thrilled to partner with a program like TURN that, like we do in the Revolutionary City, immerses millions in a story of the period and its heroes.”
During the last round of filming, Colonial Williamsburg’s director of marketing communications Janet Eason said the foundation hoped to forge an ongoing partnership with the show. Advertisements for Colonial Williamsburg’s RevQuest spy game were aired with the first season of the show.
The show is the second major production to film at Colonial Williamsburg, joining HBO’s 2008 miniseries John Adams.
Cast and crew from the show are also slated to participate in a discussion with College of William & Mary faculty early next month.
