Police: Two Men Arrested for Holding Woman in Car
Two men are facing abduction charges after police say they tried to force a woman into a vehicle with them.
Colin Crapse and Austin Vineyard, both 19, were driving a Mazda around Monticello Avenue and Route 199 at around 8:14 a.m. Jan. 10 with an 18-year-old woman when she and Crapse got into an argument, Stephanie Williams with the James City County Police said.
The woman was able to get out of the car and began walking away toward News Road, Williams said.
Crapse and Vineyard followed her as she walked, and Crapse, who was in the passenger seat, got out of the car, picked her up and placed her back inside the vehicle as she was fighting to get away, Williams said.
The two men are suspected of locking the car doors in an attempt to keep her in the car, but she was able to get out, authorities said.
A bystander who observed the incident called 911, and officers found the woman as she approached the Shell gas station at the intersection of News Road and Monticello Avenue.
Crapse and Vineyard, who were arrested in the same area, were each charged with one felony count of abduction and brought to Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
Two JCC Homes Reportedly Broken Into
A man told James City County Police several items were missing from his home in the Kingspoint subdivision off Route 199.
The Kingspoint resident believes his house was broken into overnight between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Jan. 10. Williams said the man went to buy coffee that morning and realized some cash was missing from his wallet.
He also reported money was missing from his glasses case, and silver-plated silverware and a silver pot were also missing from his home.
Williams said there were no signs of forced entry into the home.
Another person reported more than $3,000 worth of items were taken from his home in the 6800 block of Arthur Hills Drive while he was out of town. There were no signs of forced entry into the home, Williams said.
The homeowner told officers he returned to his home Tuesday to find a radio tuner, false books, stamps, a garage door remote, stainless steel forks, a wedding band set worth $3,000, a vacuum worth $250 and a crock pot worth $300 missing.
Neighbors told police they witnessed a previous caretaker from a now-deceased family member at the home and driving the homeowner’s car.
Warrants have been obtained, but authorities are not releasing the name of the suspect until an arrest has been made.
Teen Admits to Stealing Bicycle From JCC Business
A 17-year-old boy has been charged with grand larceny, destruction of property and breaking and entering after police say he admitted to breaking into a business and stealing a bicycle.
Officers found the right front door of BikeBeat Bicycle Shop in Monticello Marketplace beaten in on Dec. 20, with four bikes missing and one BMX-style bike valued at $1060 on the sidewalk, a police report states.
An investigation into the incident led officers to arrest the 17-year-old — whose name cannot be released due to his age — for stealing one of the four missing bikes.
The teenager admitted to entering the business and leaving with one of the bikes, authorities said.
Three of the four bikes are still missing, and the investigation is ongoing.
VPRJ Inmate Accused of Damaging Nurse’s Laptop
A 27-year-old woman currently being held at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail is facing a felony destruction of property charge after authorities say she damaged a laptop.
VPRJ staff told James City County Police they were handing out medication to inmates Jan. 9 when Sandra Corbitt, who is being held at the jail on a capias and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct, requested a medication that is not on her list of medications to receive.
Authorities said Corbitt became upset and slammed a $1,579 laptop sitting on a nurse’s cart to the ground.
The laptop was destroyed beyond repair, Williams said.
Police: Teen Stopped For Speeding, Found with Pot
An 18-year-old man police say was driving 70 miles per hour in a 55 mile-per-hour zone was charged with distribution of marijuana.
An officer pulled over Harold Lloyd Midcap on Route 199 between Brookewood Drive and College Creek Dec. 30 after finding he was speeding, Williams said.
When the officer approached Midcap’s car, he smelled marijuana. Midcap admitted to having the drug in a bag in a backseat, and the officer found more than a half ounce but less than 5 pounds of weed and a digital scale in the car, Williams said.
Police charged Midcap with felony distribution of marijuana and issued a summons for speeding, and Midcap was taken into custody Wednesday.
Former JCC Woman Accused of Welfare Fraud
A 37-year-old woman is facing a felony charge after being accused of falsely receiving more than $6,000 in welfare benefits.
Melissa T. Arrington, a former James City County resident who court records indicate now lives in Lawrenceville, was charged with a misdemeanor count of making false statements to obtain public assistance or benefits in October after the Virginia Department of Social Services reported she had been making false statements to them between March 2013 and February 2014.
In all, Arrington is accused of receiving more than $6,000 in Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to which she was not entitled, Williams said.
After investigating the incident and consulting with the Williamsburg-James City County Commonwealth’s Attorney, the misdemeanor charge was dropped and Arrington was charged with a felony count of the same charge Tuesday.
The case has been certified to a grand jury, who will decide if there is enough evidence to bring the case to Circuit Court.
