Investigators and building officials are on the scene at Nelson’s Grant on George Washington Memorial Highway where a building under construction partially collapsed, temporarily trapping two workers.
Five people were injured in the collapse, one of whom was transported to the hospital via Nightingale helicopter, said Assistant Fire Chief Paul Long with the York County Fire and Life Safety.
All five were transported to local hospitals where they are being treated for injuries not life-threatening.
Officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are working to identify the cause.
Emergency personnel received the call at around 1:45 p.m. and arrived at the scene within minutes, Long said.
Steve Miller, developer of Nelson’s Grant — on the east side of Route 17 just north of Fort Eustis Boulevard —said some of the roof trusses came down on the commercial building at around 1:30 p.m. Friday.
Long said two people were trapped under the roof truss material for about 20 minutes. Emergency responders had to stabilize the scene before extracting them.
It is unclear at this time what caused the roof trusses to collapse.
A total of 25 emergency personnel responded to the scene. Long said bystanders were attempting to help those injured and trapped before emergency responders arrived.
Correction: This article has been corrected to state two people were trapped in the collapse.
