Two suspects in unrelated vehicle thefts are in custody months after police took out warrants for their arrest.
Both men, 41-year-old Shawn Antowan Perry and 50-year-old Dallas Graves III, were named to James City County Police Department’s Most Wanted list.
On Jan. 3 Chesapeake Police arrested Perry, who has been on the Most Wanted list since 2013 and is accused of stealing a car and money from someone he knows.
Perry’s charges stem from an incident July 3, 2013, when he was given permission to drive his friend’s Ford F350 to Suffolk so he could move a semi-truck parked in a church lot, said Stephanie Williams, a spokesperson for the police.
Authorities said the victim gave Perry his credit card and debit cards, telling him he could use $40 to put gas in the truck. Perry never moved the semi-truck, driving away in the car instead with the victim’s cell phone and credit card, police said.
The victim called his own cell phone July 5, 2013 and was able to reach Perry, who told him the car was at the Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth with the keys inside the car, Williams said.
The victim retrieved his car, but his cell phone and debit cards were never recovered. Fraudulent charges on the victim’s bank account for $222 and ATM withdrawals totaling $459 were reported. The victim also told police his GPS was missing from the vehicle.
Warrants were taken out in July 2013 charging Perry with one felony charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle, two felony charges of credit card theft, two felony charges of credit card fraud and one misdemeanor count of larceny.
Graves, who is accused of stealing a Ford F150 from a woman he knows in October, was arrested Jan. 3 after police responded to the 3000 block of Friendship Drive off Chickahominy Road for a report of a threat.
The initial warrants against him are in regard to an incident Oct. 21, Williams said. A woman reported Graves stole her car, and an officer responding to the call saw a car matching the provided description traveling southbound on Chickahominy Road toward Cranston’s Mill Pond Road before turning into the entrance of the Reeds Gate subdivision then making a U-Turn.
Graves then drove slowly past the officer’s vehicle with his window partially down and drove away when the officer called for him to stop, Williams said.
The officer did not pursue the car once he lost sight of it, Williams said. Instead, officers went to the 3000 block of Chickahominy Road where the call originated and found the Ford pickup unoccupied in the driveway, police said. Graves was not at the house.
Warrants were obtained charging Graves with unauthorized use of a vehicle, evading and eluding police and driving while his license was revoked.
