The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry’s largest commuter boat will be out of service for about a month for the installation of a new environmentally friendly generator.
The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to begin installation of the $500,000 diesel generator Monday for the Pocahontas, and motorists can expect a reduction of about 20 vehicles per hour during the month the boat is out of service.
Laurie Simmons, a spokesperson for VDOT, said each of the four vessels will eventually receive the new generators, which reduce noise, increase reliability, use less fuel and produce less exhaust.
The boats’ current generators date back to the 1980s, making it difficult to find replacement parts for them, Simmons said.
The Williamsburg ferryboat is next in line to receive the new generator in March.
