The James City County Police Department and the Virginia State Police are once again participating in Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, a nationwide campaign aimed at stopping drunken drivers who may be out during the holidays.
Patrol officers will be “out in force” until New Year’s Day and are asking drivers to be on high alert for drunken drivers, a James City County Police Department news release states.
In December 2012, 830 were killed in crashed involving at least one driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher, Stephanie Williams with the James City County Police Department said in the news release. Of those, 26 deaths occurred on Christmas Day.
Locally, there were four fatalities and 15 injuries resulting from alcohol-related crashes in James City County last year.
Authorities are asking citizens to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, calling a taxi, using public transportation or calling a friend or family member for a ride.
In addition, officials encourage citizens who see drunken drivers on the road to call police right away.
