A 68-year-old James City County man is accused of hitting a family member in the back of a head with a hammer, but he’s not sure why he allegedly did it.

Police received a phone call from a 70-year-old woman around 6:50 p.m. last Thursday, who told them William R. Hodge attacked her with a hammer in the Fox Ridge neighborhood, Stephanie Williams with the James City County Police said.

The woman fled to a neighbor’s house, Williams said. Medics arrived and treated the woman, who had two or three lumps and lacerations on the back of her head.

When police arrived at the alleged victim and Hodge’s residence on Longhill Station Road, Hodge told officers he had hit her with a hammer but “wasn’t sure why,” Williams said. She said there was no argument and he gave no reason as to why he allegedly struck her.

Hodge was taken into custody and charged with felony assault.
