A 20-year-old Newport News woman pleaded guilty to writing and cashing a check worth several hundred dollars that belonged to an elderly woman for whom she was caring.
Monique Davender was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in prison with all but 15 days suspended.
She was arrested May 12 after York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered she had written a check belonging to a resident of Colonial Harbor Nursing Home in Yorktown worth $400.
The check was cashed June 7 at SunTrust Bank in Grafton.
Davender worked in the home on the 2400 block of Fort Eustis Boulevard as a member of a Direct Home Nursing.
She was originally charged with eight felony counts of forging and uttering checks, one felony count of obtaining money by false pretenses, three misdemeanor counts of obtaining money by false pretenses and one misdemeanor count of petit larceny.
All charges were dropped except for the felony count of obtaining money by false pretenses, which was amended in a plea agreement to felony grand larceny.
