Contractors have been named for two York County stormwater drainage projects, with work on one project slated to begin as soon as Monday.
In an effort to alleviate flooding around the intersection of Cook Road and Old York Hampton Highway, a retention pond will be built on land owned by the county.
The area has been prone to flooding in recent years, with property owners around the area experiencing pools of standing water from summer rains.
The pond will be built across the street from the ponds that currently exist around that site, which were not designed to handle stormwater. The space will become a wetlands area when it is completed in spring 2015.
The Cook Road project will cost $1,056,271, with $225,000 from the Virginia Department of Transportation revenue share funds that will cover the portion of the project in the right-of-way along Cook Road, and $414,806 from the Stormwater Local Assistance Fund administered by the Department of Environmental Quality. The county is required to match the Stormwater Local Assistance Fund.
The project is slated to begin before the end of September. The work may cause minor traffic issues during construction, according to a news release from the county.
A similar project is set to begin as early as Monday for Dare Elementary School. A retention pond and a stream restoration will be placed near the school to relieve flooding and create a wetland area to improve water quality.
The existing stream, which has deteriorated significantly in recent years, is considered a safety and environmental hazard.
“This stream is a tributary to Chisman Creek, which ultimately leads to the Poquoson River and eventually the Chesapeake Bay,” said Stormwater Engineer Anna Drake in a news release. “The stormwater pond and wetlands area that will be created will serve as a filter for the stormwater runoff from the drainage area that was developed before stormwater regulations.”
The Dare Elementary project will cost $878,410.80, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration giving the county $2,005 for the project. In addition, the county received $507,009 from the Department of Environmental Quality, which is matched by the county.
Access to the path and footbridge that crosses the stream from Hudgins Farm Drive to Dare Elementary School will be blocked for the duration of construction.
The project is slated for completion by Feb. 23.
