A man has been charged in connection with a four-car accident at the intersection of Route 17 and Dare Road on Sunday.
Police say Yorktown resident Noel Thomas Wakelyn Jr. was driving a 2005 Chevy Silverado southbound on Route 17 around 11 a.m. when he crashed into a 2005 Nissan Altima stopped at a red light at the intersection of Dare Road.
Wakelyn hit the car “at a high rate of speed,” and the impact from the collision pushed the Altima forward into the intersection, Sgt. H.A. Nealy with the Virginia Highway Patrol said. The Altima then hit a 2002 Acura RSX hatchback that had been turning left onto Grafton Road.
Wakelyn’s vehicle overturned from the impact and struck a 2015 Ford F250 in the adjacent lane, Nealy said. Wakelyn and the driver of the Altima were transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center for injuries.
Both Route 17 southbound lanes reopened around 12:40 p.m. Sunday.
Nealy said several complainants called York County dispatch about Wakelyn’s driving leading up to the accident. Wakelyn was charged with a misdemeanor count of hit-and-run that occurred moments before the accident.
He is also charged with a felony count of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol third offense, a felony count of revocation of license for multiple DUI convictions and a felony count of maiming as a result of driving while intoxicated.
He will appear in York-Poquoson General District Court at 8:45 a.m. Nov. 12.
