Two 15-year-old girls were rescued from the James River on Wednesday afternoon after they were carried away from Jamestown Beach by a current.
The girls told authorities they were swimming when the current took them to the end of the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry pier. They held onto the pier to avoid being swept farther out, and they were unable to swim back to shore on their own. Ferry crew members provided them with life jackets, according to a news release from James City County.
A James City County Parks and Recreation employee saw what was going on and called the nearby 4-H Club camp. A few citizens took a john boat out to where the girls were hanging on and rescued them, said Deputy Chief Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department.
The girls had some minor scratches. They refused treatment when they arrived on shore, according to the news release.
Nobody is facing any charges due to the incident. Ferry service was temporarily delayed as the girls were rescued from the water.
