Update 4:48 p.m.: One lane on Interstate 64 East at milemarker 222 in New Kent County has reopened to traffic after a crash earlier today.
Sgt. Stephan M. Vick of the Virginia State Police said the accident involved nine vehicles.
Investigators believe a 2007 Freightliner Box truck operated by 41-year-old Norfolk resident James R. Frazier was traveling in the left lane when it came upon slowing traffic.
Vick said Frazier told troopers he looked down to get water, and when he looked up, traffic was stopping. His truck struck a Toyota minivan, which then struck a Chevrolet Silverado. Because of that accident, six other vehicles, including two tractor-trailers, were involved in separate accidents.
Four people were hurt in the crash. They were taken to MCV Hospital in Richmond for treatment.
Frazier faces one count of reckless driving.
