One person is believed to have received more than $29,000 in overpaid benefits from the James City County Department of Social Services between 2008 and 2011.
Stephanie Williams-Ortery of the James City County Police Department said police received a report of the alleged overpayments Tuesday from the social services fraud coordinator. She said the suspect received $29,804.80 in overpaid benefits between June 2008 and April 2011 after providing social services with falsified wage verification forms and failing to report some employers and changes in status.
Nobody has been charged in connection to the fraudulent overpayments. A call to the James City County Department of Social Services seeking comment was not returned.
The investigation into the overpayments continues, Williams-Ortery said.
