The York County School Board will host two community meetings next week to present details of how the more than $2 million budget gap between the school board’s budget and the county administrator’s proposed budget will affect students.
The school board members voted Monday to pass a $128.5 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year. That budget assumes York County would allocate the full funding request from the school board instead of the figure proposed by York County Administrator James McReynolds in his proposed budget, which is $2,091,675 less than what the board has requested.
At Monday’s meeting, the school board members expressed their frustration with planning their budget amid declining state revenues and a contribution from the county that does not meet what they have described as urgent needs.
Among the items caught in the gap between the two budgets is a 3 percent raise for York County School Division employees. McReynolds’ budget contains funding for a 3 percent raise for county employees, a point the school board members mentioned several times Monday.
Other funding issues facing the school board are costs associated with a projected 190 new students in the division next year, investments needed to maintain the current technology infrastructure and a state-mandated investment into the Virginia Retirement System.
The two meetings are as follows:
- 7 p.m. April 1 at Grafton High School
- 7 p.m. April 3 at Bruton High School
Attendees will have the chance to pose questions to the school board after a presentation at each meeting.
