A line of violent thunderstorms blew through the Historic Triangle on Friday afternoon, with wind gusts in excess of 60 mph knocking down trees throughout the area.
In York County, a downed tree is currently blocking East Rochambeau Drive near the intersection of Barlow Road, said Paul Long of the York County Division of Fire and Life Safety. He said a downed tree is also partially blocking Baptist Road in Lackey. A third downed tree on Brown’s Lane in Lackey is in the process of being cleared.
Long said no injuries have been reported to the Division of Fire and Life Safety. Williamsburg Fire Department Spokesperson Eric Stone said there were no calls for service or downed trees in the city.
In James City County, trees fell on John Tyler Highway near New Castle Road and the Chickahominy Bridge, said James City County Fire Department Chief Tal Luton. He said another tree fell on Longhill Road near Ford’s Colony and another on Brick Bat Road. All four trees have been cleared.
On Merrimac Trail, a tree limb fell on a moving car, forcing it off the road. The woman inside the car was not hurt.
Luton said a transformer on John Tyler Highway near Williamsburg Crossing was damaged, which has resulted in power outages for some people in that area. He said the transformer is supposed to be back online by 4 p.m.
Dominion Virginia Power is reporting 120 customers without power in York County and 404 customers without power in James City County. No customer lost power in Williamsburg.
The storm started shortly after noon, with heavy winds and penny-size hail pelting western James City County. By 1:30 p.m., the storm had crossed much of the triangle as it moved northeast.
