Those worried MAD About Chocolate’s reopening delay will prevent them from buying sweets designed by renowned dessert chef Marcel Desaulniers for Valentine’s Day can rest easy.
MAD will be taking phone orders next week from Feb. 11 to Feb. 14 and plans to reopen for business as usual the following Tuesday. Connie Desaulniers, co-owner of MAD with her husband Marcel, said this week the construction delays in front of the building would not prevent them from putting Valentine’s Day treats together and allowing pickup orders from the shop from noon to 5 p.m.
The sidewalk in front of the Triangle Building where the business is located is under reconstruction — part of a city makeover of Prince George Street — and recent inclement weather has held up the work. Because Connie Desaulniers said the entrance to their business is “pretty torn up,” customers picking up orders are encouraged to call the business ahead of time to meet in the parking lot behind the building.
For pickup orders during Valentine’s Day week, call 603-5034 instead of the shop’s main telephone line.
The chocolate shop briefly closed its doors in October to undergo a self-described MADamorphosis, changing from full service cafe to a dessert shop and art gallery featuring paintings by Connie Desauliers.
Marcel Desaulniers created the “Death by Chocolate” cake, a six-layer cake that contains 1/2-pound of butter and 4 pounds of chocolate, while he owned The Trellis restaurant in Williamsburg. Desaulniers is known for his rich and grandiose desserts and he’s also written 10 cookbooks, one with the famous cake’s namesake.
