Fourth Quarter Unemployment Rates Remain Lower Than State Average in James City, York

Historic Triangle Sign USE1Following the trend of the first three quarters in 2013, fourth quarter unemployment rates in James City and York counties stayed below the state average, while the City of Williamsburg’s rate stood at more than double the average.

The statewide fourth quarter average unemployment rate was 5.1 percent. James City’s fourth quarter average was 4.13 percent, York’s was 4.53 percent and Williamsburg’s was 11.17 percent.

For the month of October, the state average unemployment rate was 5.5 percent. James City had 1,567 citizens out of work, putting the unemployment rate at 4.5 percent; York had 1,666 unemployed people for a rate of 4.9 percent; and Williamsburg had 737 people unemployed to set the rate at 11.9 percent.

In November, the statewide unemployment rate dropped to 5 percent. Each locality’s rate followed, putting James City’s unemployment rate at 4.1 percent, York’s at 4.5 percent and Williamsburg’s at 11.1 percent.

December’s unemployment rates were the lowest of the fourth quarter, with the state average set at 4.8 percent. James City County had 3.8 percent of its labor force unemployed while York and Williamsburg had 4.2 percent and 10.5 percent unemployed, respectively. Those rates account for 1,332 unemployed people in James City, 1,427 in York and 649 in Williamsburg.

In December, Virginia had the 12th lowest unemployment rate and was tied with New Hampshire.

James City tied with two other Virginia localities for the eighth lowest unemployment rate in December. York tied with Nelson County to rank 19th, and Williamsburg ranked 133rd for the second highest rate in the state.
