York County sheriff’s deputies say an alert neighbor helped thwart a thief who took a package off the doorstep of a residence shortly after a FedEx driver had delivered it.
Provided with a license plate number, vehicle and suspect description, deputies went to the Yorkshire Downs neighborhood in Tabb where the theft was reported late Monday morning and were able to locate the suspect, Lance Patrick Luckey, Jr., a 44-year-old whose last known address was on Hunter Trace in Hampton. A news release said Deputy Crockett found the suspect’s work truck at the rear of the Yorkshire Downs shopping center.
Deputies say Luckey is an employee of a pest control company. The neighbor who reported Luckey taking a package off a doorstep also reported seeing the man walk from residence to residence in the 400 block of Arabian Circle as he picked up the package.
Luckey faces a charge of grand larceny and trespassing. The package he allegedly stole contained several books valued at more than $700. The package has not been recovered, deputies said.
Investigators do not think Luckey is the same person who has been stealing outgoing mail from York mailboxes over the past few weeks.
York-Poquoson Sheriff Danny Diggs commended the witness for stepping forward and deputies for their role in catching the suspect.
