A contractor’s boring machine struck a 2-inch gas line near Kingsmill Resort on Tuesday afternoon.

James City County Fire Department was called to the 1000 block of Kingsmill Road around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, and a Virginia Natural Gas crew arrived soon after, said fire spokesperson Capt. Alton Catlett.

Because a 2-inch gas line is more difficult to repair, the utility company needed the help of a second crew. That truck arrived about an hour later.

The repair work concluded around 2:45 p.m., Catlett said.

“There is no danger to residents in that area or those in the club,” he said.

Because of low traffic along that portion of Kingsmill Road, emergency officials found it unnecessary to close off the road.

“We’re still trying to determine the root cause of what happened,” said Duane Bourne, a spokesperson for the utility company. “Our main focus in these cases is to first stop the flow of gas as quickly and safely as possible.”
