Jim Kelly has been re-elected to the Jamestown seat on the Williamsburg-James City County School Board.

As of 9 p.m. Kelly has 4,102 votes, which is good for 97.04 percent of the total. There were 125 write-ins, which accounted for 2.96 percent of the total votes.

He ran unopposed in Tuesday’s election. Ballots were cast in the school board race by 38.9 percent of total registered voters in the Jamestown District.

Kelly has not yet responded to an email from WYDaily seeking comment on his victory.

Kelly is the manager of crane engineering and quality at Newport News Shipbuilding. His wife Kelly teaches first grade at J. Blaine Blayton Elementary School. Together they have raised three children who attend school in the Williamsburg-James City County School Division.

He first joined the school board in 2009 as the Berkeley representative, when he replaced Mary Ann Maimone after her resignation. He ran unopposed in 2010 for the Berkeley seat, where he picked up 97.16 percent of the votes.

Redistricting shuffled seats for the school board, with Kelly shifting to the Jamestown District while Jamestown District representative Ruth Larson was shifted to the Berkeley District. Kelly finished his term in 2011, while Larson successfully ran for the Berkeley seat that year. In February 2012, Kelly was appointed to fill the empty Jamestown seat.

Kelly squared off against A. Reese Peck for the Jamestown seat in a 2012 special election to fill out the seat Larson vacated to take the Berkeley seat. In that race, Kelley picked up 64.26 percent of the vote compared to Peck, who got 34.90 percent. Kelly had run unopposed for the Berkeley district in 2010, where he had received 97.16 percent of the votes.

WYDaily sent an identical questionnaire to each candidate for the school board. Kelly’s answers are available here.
