Man Arrested for January Copper Theft

The James City County Police Department has arrested a man they believe broke into a Dominion Power Substation in Grove and stole copper Jan. 11.

York County resident Mark Hermann was charged by officers Oct. 29, as police were waiting on results from the state crime lab in Richmond. In January, copper wire was stolen from the Dominion Power Substation on the 8400 block of Pocahontas Trail. That was one of a string of copper burglaries that took place at Dominion substations in that part of James City County.

The wire Hermann is alleged to have stolen is valued at $500. He did another $1,500 in damage to the substation, Rubino said.

A search warrant was executed at Hermann’s property in York County, where authorities found bolt cutters that matched the busted padlock at the substation as well as wire the crime lab confirmed came from the substation.

Rubino said police are looking into any other incidents Hermann might be involved in. Hermann is facing one count of grand larceny, one count of possession of burglary tools, one count of damaging a facility used to furnish electrical power and one count of entering a property with intent to damage. All of those charges are felonies other than the final one.

He is also facing a single charge of grand larceny from a December incident at a Dominion substation in James City County.

In York County, Hermann is facing two counts of grand larceny, one count of possession of burglary tools, one count of selling or distributing stolen property and one count of damaging a facility used to furnish electrical power. Deputies from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office arrested him Jan. 18 along with two other men in connection to a copper theft from a York County Dominion substation in January.

Hermann is scheduled to appear in York-Poquoson District Court on those charges at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 12. He will go to trial for the December incident at 9 a.m. Nov. 7. He will appear in Williamsburg-James City County District Court for the latest charges at 1 p.m. Nov. 19.

Busch Gardens Employee Accused of Giving Out Thousands in Free Parking Passes

A Busch Gardens parking employee has been arrested after he allegedly gave out between $1,200 and $3,100 in preferred parking passes between Sept. 8 and 14.

Rubino said 20-year-old Darryl Malik Glenn gave out about 126 passes to people during that stretch. He said Busch Gardens staff had talked to Glenn about not giving out passes before but he had continued to engage in the activity. He said Glenn did not appear to know the people to whom he was giving the free passes.

Glenn faces a felony embezzlement charge over the incident. He will appear in Williamsburg-James City County District Court at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 12.
