In addition to Yorktown Day, a slew of other activities are going on around Yorktown this weekend to celebrate the defeat of the British in 1781.
The Yorktown Victory Center is hosting musket and artillery demonstrations and a hands-on interpretive program with re-creations of the Continental Army encampment and a 1780s farm during its annual celebration.
Those who visit the encampment can enroll in “A School for the Soldier,” where they will have the opportunity to drill with wooden muskets and learn about soldiers provisions and sleeping quarters. The program also looks at troop communication during the war, and offers lessons about the importance of earthworks.
The school sessions will be offered at 10:35 a.m. and 12:35 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Yorktown Victory Center. Artillery demonstrations will be held at 11:05 a.m., 3:05 p.m. and 4:05 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
“The Price of Liberty” will be held at 1:35 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the re-created farm, showing the sacrifices made by Americans who signed the Declaration of Independence. Farm visitors will get the chance to see textile and spinning demonstrations at 10:05 a.m., open-hearth cooking at 12:05 p.m. and the transition from farmer to soldier in the citizen militia at 3:35 p.m.
Admission is $9.75 for adults and $5.50 for ages 6 through 12. Children under 6 are admitted free. Save 20 percent by purchasing a combination ticket to the Jamestown Settlement. Historic Triangle residents receive complimentary admission with proof of residency.
