A man who led Poquoson Police and deputies from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office on a chase Tuesday evening has been identified as 32-year-old Kevin P. Ardary of Newport News.

Ardary is being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail in connection with the incident. He is currently facing one charge of felony eluding police and one count of reckless driving in York County and in Poquoson. Additional charges are pending against him, according to a news release from the Virginia State Police.

The incident began at about 5:40 p.m. Tuesday when a Poquoson Police officer attempted to stop a 1995 Oldsmobile on Wythe Creek Road near Lauren Drive in Poquoson after observing reckless driving on the part of the Oldsmobile’s driver. The Oldsmobile didn’t pull over, so the officer began chasing the car.

The Oldsmobile eventually reached a dead end on River Road, where it entered a lot under construction and stopped. Officers approached the vehicle on foot before Ardary allegedly spun the car around and charged toward them. The officers drew their guns and began shooting at the car, which sped past them back down River Road.

Poquoson Police resumed the pursuit, chasing the car into York County where YPSO deputies took the lead. The pursuit eventually ended on Hampton Highway, where the Oldsmobile was forced to stop due to heavy traffic. Poquoson Police and YPSO deputies took Ardary into custody. He was treated at the scene due to a bullet that had grazed his arm, however he refused to be taken to the hospital for additional treatment, according to the release.

Poquoson Police Chief Cliff Bowen asked the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Chesapeake Field Office Police Shooting Investigative Team to investigate the incident. The Poquoson Police officers who shot at the car have been placed on administrative leave with pay.

The investigation into the incident continues.
