Trick-or-Treat Hours Set
In James City County, trick-or-treat hours this year are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. Trick-or-treating is for children 12 and under.
James City County Police have recommended some tips to stay safe on Halloween:
- Costumes should be made from non-flammable material easy to see in the dark. Reflective tape can be sewn onto costumes. Costumes should be short enough to prevent tripping and should be easy to walk in.
- Makeup should be worn instead of masks, which can prevent children from seeing or breathing easily. If masks are worn, they should be removed before crossing streets.
- Trick-or-treaters should plan a route ahead of time on streets that are familiar in well-lit neighborhoods.
- Young children should not trick-or-treat without supervision. Older children who trick-or-treat without an adult should do so in groups. Flashlights or glow sticks should be carried for light and to increase visibility to cars.
- Only go to homes with the porch light on.
- Cross the street at corners, not between parked cars or in the middle of a block. Children should stay on sidewalks when possible. If sidewalks aren’t available, children should walk to the far left side of the roadway and walk facing traffic.
- When approaching houses, watch for candles in pumpkins or other decorations that could catch costumes on fire.
- Trick-or-treaters should never go into the home of a stranger, even if they are invited inside.
- Candy should not be eaten until an adult checks it. Any candy not in original packaging should be thrown out. Report any suspicious candy to the police as soon as possible.
- Drivers should watch out for children trick-or-treating because children may forget to watch out for drivers.
