A new 7-Eleven convenience store is being constructed at the corner of Second and Page streets in Williamsburg where the Exxon Mobil station used to stand.
Virginia-based contractor Rudolf Construction was given the green light by the city Sept. 30 to start building the store, which will not have gas pumps.
Deputy Director of Planning Carolyn Murphy said the project went before the Architectural Review Board in May, the Planning Commission in June and the City Council approved a landscape waiver in July for a parking lot, which edged into the city right-of-way.
National developer Verdad Real Estate is heading the project through a smaller entity called 248 Next Page LLC, which owns the property.
Michael Montgomery, director of construction at Verdad, said the building that once housed the Exxon Mobil station was demolished in early September by East Coast Demolition.
Now, he said, Rudolf Construction will start construction on the convenience store with surveyors expected on-site before the end of the week. Though Montgomery said Verdad is trying to speed up the process to complete the store by New Year’s Eve, it is expected to be completed by mid-January.
