York Sheriff: 32 Vehicles Rummaged Through in 48 Hours

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office is investigating after 32 vehicles were entered in the Foxwood and Bethel Manor subdivisions and the Belmont Apartments between Tuesday night and Thursday morning, resulting in the theft of numerous electronic devices.

Lt. Dennis Ivey of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office said 31 of the incidents occurred in Foxwood and Bethel Manor. Seven vehicles were entered in Foxwood while 24 were entered in Bethel Manor. Most of the vehicles were unlocked, while the ones that were locked showed no signs of forced entry.

One of the victims said she saw heard someone shout “let’s go” and saw a car drive away at about 3 a.m. but she did not call 911. Items stolen include cash, purses, wallets, GPS units, cell phones, iPods, garage door openers, flashlights and keys.

“Nine times out of 10, if you lock your vehicle and don’t have valuables in it, the suspect will come up, look in the vehicle, shake the handle and move on,” Ivey said. “Don’t make it easy for them.”

Ivey also said it’s important to properly conceal any valuables in a vehicle. He specifically mentioned dash-mounted GPS systems, saying that even if the GPS unit is concealed, the plastic mount and cord can still suggest to potential thieves that a GPS unit is in the vehicle.

Anyone with information on the break-ins is encouraged to call Crime Line at 888-LOCK-U-UP (888-562-5887).
