A man believed to have used a credit card stolen from a vehicle May 28 outside the Yorktown YMCA to buy $225 worth of Aeropostale gift cards has been identified as 25-year-old Joseph Paul Werling.
Werling is being held at the Butler County Jail in Hamilton, Ohio, on charges from a June 3 incident in Springdale, Ohio. Lt. Dennis Ivey of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office said Werling will be extradited to York County to face charges stemming from the May 28 incident once any trial and jail time in Ohio is finished.
The sheriff’s office released a photograph of Werling on May 31 hoping the public could help identify him after he allegedly stole a set of car keys from a member at the Yorktown YMCA, used the keys to gain entry to a vehicle where he stole a Rolex watch and a wallet and then bought the gift cards with a credit card from the wallet at the Tabb Walgreens.
Ivey said Werling was identified by someone in the area who said he or she thought they recognized him. He was last known to live in Mason, Ohio.
He is facing one count of grand larceny, one count of felony credit card fraud and four counts of credit card theft from the May 28 incident in York County.
Werling was recently arrested by the Springdale Police Department in Springdale, Ohio. A spokesperson for that police department said Werling allegedly went to a mall in that town June 3 where he met with a man from Craigslist who he said he would sell an iPhone. Werling allegedly took that man’s money and went into an AT&T store to clear the phone’s data. He then told the store’s employees that two men outside the store were trying to fight him and took off running through a back door from the store. He was arrested by Springdale police shortly thereafter.
