Police are investigating a pair of Friday afternoon bank robberies — one at the Bayland Federal Credit Union at 7031 Richmond Road in James City County and the other about 30 minutes later at the BB&T on Mooretown Road in Upper York County.

Investigators have yet to say if the two robberies are related, though in both cases the robber was a black male wearing a traffic vest and a fake beard. Reports also said the robber brandished a black semi-automatic handgun in both cases. Nobody was hurt in either robbery.

A news release from Maj. Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department said the 5-foot-8 to 6-foot-tall man entered Bayland Credit Union around 2:55 p.m. He walked up to the teller, where he brandished the handgun. He demanded money and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash from two tellers before fleeing the bank on foot.

At around 3:22 p.m., a black male entered the BB&T where he displayed the handgun and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to a news release from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Department.

At around 2:30 p.m., James City County Police received a 911 call from an unknown person who said there were several armed subjects with masks behind Lafeyette High School. That report turned out to be unfounded, and police suspect the call was made to divert police away from the area around Bayland Federal Credit Union.

The James City County release said he was wearing a dark hoodie with an orange reflective safety vest, white tennis shoes, light colored gloves, sunglasses and a fake beard. The release also said that police are working together to determine if the same man robbed a Shell Station in Newport News Friday morning.
