Supervisors to Discuss Changes to Signage Ordinance

The York County Board of Supervisors will take a break from budget work sessions this week with a regular meeting.

A single public hearing is scheduled to discuss changes to county ordinance involving sidewalk signs and signage in Yorktown. The Planning Commission voted 7-0 at its March meeting to recommend the supervisors approve the changes.

The three biggest changes are as follows:

  • Increase the size allowance for wall-mounted signs in the Waterfront area. The current limit is 5 square-feet, and the proposed changes would up that to 1 square-foot per foot of building width with a maximum of 50 square-feet.
  • Allow each business in a multi-tenant building to display temporary signs and banners instead of the current arrangement, which allows only for a single sign no matter how many businesses are in a frontage.
  • Permit businesses to display sidewalk signs within 15 feet of the front of their building.

Earl Joyner, president of the York County Chamber of Commerce and Jim Noel, the director of Economic Development for the county, spoke in favor of the changes at the meeting. Assistant County Administrator J. Mark Carter referred to the existing rules regulating waterfront signage as “restrictive.”

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at York Hall.
