If history is something that interests you, listen up: the Virginia’s Civil War 150 HistoryMobile will be on display and open to the public Wednesday and Thursday at Tabb Library.
The HistoryMobile is a museum in the trailer of a truck that travels around the state on a four-year tour that began in July 2011. At the museum, you can find individual stories of the Civil War from people who experienced it. More than 1,700 people saw the HistoryMobile at its last stop in York County in May 2012, according to a news release.
“You’re not just going into a museum and looking at a statue or some Civil War artifacts in a glass case,” said Kevin Smith, director of York County Library Services. “It’s interactive. It gives the experience of regular citizens, not just soldiers.”
Living historians from the 1st Regiment of Virginia Volunteers and the North-South Skirmish Association will provide a Civil War artillery and small arms demonstration during the two-day event. They’ll be set up on the lawn adjacent to the HistoryMobile. Smith said he hopes for them to be able to fire cannons and mortars — don’t worry: they will be using blanks.
The event was made possible after Smith applied for the HistoryMobile to show up to the county this week to celebrate National Library Week. The York County Historical Committee and the York County Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee partnered with Smith in the application.
You can see the HistoryMobile from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Tabb Library. The event is free and open to the public.
