The Virginia Department of Transportation is warning icy conditions might be possible this morning.
Rain on Friday night and into today could cause ice to develop on ramps, bridges and overpasses throughout the early morning. Rain is expected throughout Saturday, with a high of 50 and low of 40 degrees.
VDOT monitors road conditions and pavement temperatures from its Transportation Operations Center in Virginia Beach. Because the storm started as rain, VDOT did not pre-treat the roads.
VDOT recommends the following safety tips for driving in winter weather:
- Make sure your vehicle is winter-ready
- Keep a safe distance of at least five second behind other vehicles
- Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges
Don’t slam on brakes when you hit a patch of ice. Tape brakes gently and turn slowly. Sudden changes can cause your car to spin out of control.
