The Virginia Senate Finance Committee approved a budget amendment Sunday to allocate $100,000 toward the preservation and restoration of the almost 400-year-old Jamestown Church Tower.
State Sen. John Miller (D-1st District) proposed the amendment that would set aside $100,000 for the Department of Historic Resources to use toward preserving the Jamestown Church Tower, the last standing structure from the original Jamestown colony.
The amendment, cosponsored by Sen. Tommy Norment (R-3rd District), is expected to go before the full Senate for a vote Thursday, according to an aide in Miller’s Richmond office.
The total cost of the project is expected to cost $150,000 and the remaining $50,000 is being sought from private resources.
“I am extremely pleased the funds were approved. It is essential we ensure this historic symbol of Virginia’s history is protected,” said Miller in a news release.
