Softball Registration Begins Today
Registration begins today for returning teams in the York County adult men’s and coed softball program. New teams may begin registering Feb. 11. All registration will end 5 p.m. Feb. 22 unless the league limit is reached sooner.
The leagues are as follows: men’s east, men’s west, co-ed church and co-ed industrial. The men’s west division plays double-header games Monday evenings, while the men’s east plays double header games Tuesday evenings. The co-ed church and industrial divisions play double header games Friday evenings.
League fees are $475 per team. Registration is in person only and can be done at the Parks and Recreation Office on 100 County Drive. The program is open to residents and non-residents. Those who are interested but not affiliated with a team can be placed on a “pool list.”

Registration Now Open for Youth Soccer
You can now register for spring youth soccer in York County through Feb. 15 from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Office on 100 County Drive.
Brochures for spring soccer are available at public schools, public libraries, the York County website and the Parks and Recreation Office.
Registration will also be possible at the Tabb Library from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 12. The fee is $45 for the first child and $40 for each additional child per family. The leagues include co-ed and girls from grades kindergarten through 12. Play begins March 16.

York County Libraries to Host Several Youth Activities in February
There are several free activities going on this month at York County Public Libraries.
Swing by Tabb Library at 10:30 a.m. or Yorktown Library at 1 p.m. Feb. 9 for Valentine’s Day Story Time. There will be stories, songs and a craft for children ages 3 and up. Registration is not necessary.
The monthly Lego program for children ages 6 through 12 will be at Tabb Library from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 11. Registration is currently under way, and class size is limited to 25. Parents of children under 10 must stay in the library during the program. Call 890-5110 for more information or to register.
The Teen Advisory Board will host a book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Tabb Library meeting room.
Hardback books are 50 cents and paperback books are 25 cents. All proceeds will go to Operation Gratitude to aid the cost of shipping care packages to U.S. Service members.
Teens age 13 to 18 are invited to join the Teen Book Club. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Tabb Youth Services Activity Room. Read and bring your favorite book to the Feb. 21 meeting.

Don’t Miss Tech Classes at York County Public Libraries
Teen Tech Tutors, a group geared toward teaching adults about iPads, will host a class twice a month at Tabb Library. Classes begin at 4 p.m. and last about an hour. Please bring your own iPad, if possible.

York Supervisors Looking for Students to Serve on York County Youth Commission
The York County Board of Supervisors needs students currently enrolled in grades 8 through 11 who are interested in serving on the York County Youth Commission for the 2013 to 2014 school year.
Anyone eligible who is interested in serving on the commission should return a completed application, form which can be found by clicking here, to the York County Parks and Recreation office by 5 p.m. March 6.
The Youth Commission is a way for youth-related needs and issues to make their way to the Board of Supervisors’ attention. Commission members also get a chance to take part in community service projects, learn about county government, sponsor county-wide events and build leadership skills.
If you want to get a taste of what the Youth Commission is like, interested teens and their parents are invited to the meeting tonight from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Yorktown Library Meeting Room.

Nominating Period Begins for York County Outstanding Youth Award Scholarships
York County is now accepting nominations for high school-aged students to win a $500 Outstanding Youth Award Scholarship, sponsored by the York County Board of Supervisors and the Youth Commission.
Nomination categories include compassion, courage, community service and overall achievement. The nominations are due at the Parks and Recreation Office by 5 p.m. Feb. 13.
Anyone is welcome to nominate a York County student who is currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12. Students who attend any public, private or home school are eligible. A selection committee will choose the award recipient for each category, and the four award winners will be formally recognized with their families at a Board of Supervisors meeting in May.

Free Pruning Clinics Available This Month
York County homeowners who want hands-on training to prune plants are in luck: the Virginia Cooperative Extension is offering free pruning clinics from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 16 and 23. The Feb. 16 class is at Taylor’s Do-It-Best in Poquoson and the Feb. 23 class is at Ken Matthews Garden Center.

New Officers Admitted to York County Historical Committee
York County Supervisor Sheila Noll presided recently over the induction of Lois Winter, chairman; Chris Mollenkamp, vice-chairman; Dick Lusk, treasurer; Kathy Rose, recording secretary; and Kathleen Manley, corresponding secretary to the York County Historical Committee.
