The James City County Board of Supervisors will meet Saturday morning for a retreat. The Historical Commission released the newest issue of its newsletter Focus on History and two county TV productions received awards. The Office of Housing and Community Development is offering a free first-time homebuyer’s class and its Homebuyer’s Club will start in February. Free Christmas tree recycling ends Thursday. Board of Supervisors Retreat
The James City County Board of Supervisors will meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday for its retreat.
The meeting will be in the Work Session Room in Building F at 101 Mounts Bay Rd. A live feed of the meeting will be viewable in the lobby and Board Meeting Room as well as on Cox Cable Channel 48 and the county’s website.
The agenda lists a number of items the board will discuss:
- Updates: federal, state and local
- Issues: health care reform, recycling and compensation
James City County Historical Commission released the newest issue of its Focus on History newsletter. Focus on History is published three times per year. The newsletter is available online.
The Historical Commission is accepting applications for new members. Applications are available on the Historical Commission’s website.
JCC TV Productions Receive Awards
Two James City County government TV productions received Honorable Mentions from the National Association of Telecommunication Officers and Advisors 2012 Government Programming Awards.
The two shows are Every 30 Minutes, which covers a two-day alcohol awareness event held annually at local high schools prior to prom and graduation. The program is an effort by the county’s police and fire departments, the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and the schools.
Curbside Recycling! shows viewers what can be recycled during weekly curbside collection.
Free First-Time Homebuyers Class
James City County’s Office of Housing and Community Development is offering a free First-Time Homebuyer class from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 and Thursday, Feb. 21 at the Law Enforcement Center Community Room at 4600 Opportunity Way.
The class will cover personal finances, credit and credit scoring, qualifying and applying for a loan, choosing the right home and what happens at loan closing.
Mortgage companies require some applicants to complete a homebuyer class prior to approving a loan. Citizens who attend both sessions will receive a certificate of completion.

Homebuyer Club
James City County’s Housing and Community Development Office will hold the first meeting of the 2013 Homebuyer Club at 6 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Liz Moore Realty Office in New Town.
The Homebuyer Club is a yearlong program aimed at helping citizens prepare for homeownership. Club members learn about developing spending and saving plans, calculating income for homeownership, understanding credit and credit scores, working with real estate agents and lenders and learning about insurance and closing.

Christmas Tree Recycling Ends Jan. 31
Remove all ornaments, decorations, and tree stands to make sure that your live tree can be properly recycled.
Trees will be accepted free of charge through Jan. 31 at the three County Convenience Centers: Toano Convenience Center at 185 Industrial Blvd., 1204 Jolly Pond Road, and at 107 Tewning Road.
