York Notebook: MLK Day Closures, Ski Trip Deadline Extension, Vodka Thief

York County Offices Announce Closures for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

All county offices and courts will be closed Monday. The Senior Center of York, York-Poquoson Social Services, the Virginia Cooperative Extension and York County libraries will also be closed.

The Administrative Office at the Waste Management Center will be closed, though other operations, including the transfer station, citizen drop-off, recycling center and VPPSA compost facility will be open during regularly scheduled hours.

Garbage and recycling collection will not be affected by the holiday.

York County High School Ski Trip Registration Extended

York County residents now have until noon Tuesday to register for Friday’s 12th annual High School Ski Trip to Wintergreen Ski Resort near Charlottesville.

To be eligible for the trip, you must return registration materials to the Parks and Recreation Office by Tuesday.

Any high school student — including those in public and private schools and those who are home-schooled — is eligible to register for the chaperoned day trip. The trip cost includes transportation on private buses, a lift ticket, equipment rental and a beginner’s lesson.

York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Department Looking for Vodka Thief

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Department is on the lookout for a man after he stole a bottle of Aristocrat Vodka from the ABC store on Mooretown Road in upper York County on Jan. 12.

The suspect, a white male who wore a green hat, white shirt, brown jacket, blue jeans and black shoes entered the store and picked up two pints of Aristocrat Vodka. The suspect placed one of the bottles in his pocket and left the other bottle on the counter. He said he needed to get some money to pay for the bottle, then exited the store without paying for the bottle in his pocket.

William & Mary’s Hermine Pinson to Discuss Her Poetry Tuesday at Senior Center

Hermine Pinson, a professor at William & Mary, will read and discuss excerpts from her poetry collections 1 p.m. Tuesday, including “Ashe,” “Mama Yetta,” “Dolores is Blue/Dolorez is Blues,” and her CD “Changing the Changes in Poetry & Song.”
