York Supervisors to Hold Busy Meeting Tuesday
The York County Board of Supervisors will discuss a number of items at a busy Tuesday meeting, including a special use permit for a miniature golf course on George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17), a special use permit for a 100-foot flagpole at the Rochambeau Drive Casey Toyota dealership and three new firefighter positions for the county.
The York County Planning Commission voted 5-0 at their Dec. 12 meeting to recommend that the Board of Supervisors approve the permit for the miniature golf course. The planners’ discussion focused on the safety of children who would use the proposed course and the impact the course would have an on adjacent trailer park. No residents of the trailer park expressed any concern about the project.
The mini-golf course would take up 2.74 acres and would consist of three to four nine-hole courses. The course would be built over two phases. The first phase would consist of 18 holes with a club house, restroom building and picnic area. All holes on that course would be handicap accessible. The second phase would add nine to 18 additional holes and more parking.
The only miniature golf course currently operating in York County is Pirate’s Cove on Mooretown Road near Williamsburg. Click here for more information about the proposed miniature golf course.
The supervisors will also consider a special use permit application for a 100-foot flagpole at Casey Toyota on Rochambeau Drive. The flagpole was the subject of a lengthy and at times contentious debate between the Planning Commissioners at their Dec. 12 meeting. They eventually voted 3-2 that the supervisors approve the flagpole.
York County ordinance permits by right a 75-foot flagpole, however this was deemed too short by Casey Toyota due to the curvature of Rochambeau Drive that would cause the pole to be obscured by Great Wolf Lodge. They were also concerned that the height of trees around the dealership would block vision of the flagpole from the road.
According to a representative of Casey Toyota who spoke at the Dec. 12 meeting, the flagpole is only intended as a display of patriotism and not as a marketing or advertising tool.
The supervisors will also consider a measure that would accept $330,234 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant program. The money would be used to fill three firefighter positions that due to budget constraints had been allowed to remain empty.
The grant provides funding to fill the positions for up to two years, and the county will not have to contribute any money, according to a memo from county administrator James McReynolds.
