The James City County Economic Development Authority has elected the chairman and vice chairman for 2013. New Town Skate Rink’s hours will change for January and the rink will close Jan. 13. James City County Parks and Recreation has released a list of various activities for residents of all ages. The county continues to offer free Christmas tree recycling and will soon offer free leaf drop-off. County offices have announced holiday closings for New Year’s Day. Read on for more.
JCC EDA elects chairman and vice chairman
Paul Gerhardt will serve as the 2013 chairman of James City County’s Economic Development Authority with Marshall Warner serving as vice chairman.
Gerhardt has served on the EDA since July 2008. He is a member of of the American Health Lawyers Association, Historic Triangle Real Estate Group, and Urban Land Institute, and serves on the Board of the Williamsburg Community Foundation and the Williamsburg Regional Board for Middleburg Financial Corporation. He served as president of the Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate in 2002 and still serves on its Presidents’ Council. He has been a lawyer with Kaufman & Canoles for the past 28 years.
Warner has served on the EDA since July 2006. He is the executive vice president at Chesapeake Bank, where he has worked for the past 21 years. He is currently on the Board of Directors Executive Committee for the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance and he is president of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Greater Williamsburg.
Gerhardt and Warner filled these same roles with the EDA in 2012.
The EDA is a seven-member volunteer board; members are appointed by the James City County Board of Supervisors and serve staggered four-year terms. The authority assists the county and Offices of Economic Development in expanding James City County’s business, tax and job bases.
New Town Ice Skating Rink Hours Change for January
The New Town Skate Rink’s hours will be changing over the next few days. Hours from Dec. 21- Jan. 1 are: weekdays: noon-9:30 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sundays, noon-7:30 p.m. From Jan. 4-13, the skate rink will be open on weekends only; Saturday from 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon-7:30 p.m.
The Skate Rink is located in Sullivan Square at 4301 New Town Ave. behind Legacy Hall.
Admission is $5; admission with a skate rental is $7; Skate sharpening is $5, season passes are $50 and private rental is $350 per session. Children under age 12 must be supervised by an adult at all times.
Skate sessions start when the rink opens and are held every two hours thereafter (2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m., etc.) and last one hour and 30 minutes.
The Skate Rink in New Town is offering:
- Early Bird Special, Monday through Friday from 4-5:30 p.m. Receive a free skate rental with paid admission
- Date Night on Mondays from 6-9:30 p.m. Bring a receipt from any New Town restaurant dated that day and receive free skate rentals for two with paid admission.
- New Town Night on Tuesdays from 6-9:30 p.m. Bring a receipt from any New Town store dated that day and receive free skate rental with paid admission.
- Family Skate Night on Wednesdays from 6-9:30 p.m. Receive a free child admission and skate rental with the purchase of an adult admission and skate rental.

JCC Announces Activities for All Ages
James City County announced a list of activities starting in January for residents of all ages. The activities include art classes, sports, babysitter training, horseback riding, belly dancing and other exercises and more.
The activities are open to all area residents; James City County and Williamsburg Residents pay a reduced rate and some courses are free. Visit the county’s Parks and Recreation website for a full list of activities and more details.

Christmas Tree Recycling
Remove all ornaments, decorations, and tree stands to make sure that your live tree can be properly recycled.
James City County: Trees will be accepted free of charge Dec. 26-Jan. 31 at the three County Convenience Centers in Toano Convenience Center at 185 Industrial Blvd.; at 1204 Jolly Pond Rd. and at 107 Tewning Rd.
Free Leaf Drop-Off at Jolly Pond Convenience Center
The last free leaf drop-off at the Jolly Pond Convenience Center will be from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Jan. 2-14. Leaves will only be accepted in clear bags 40 gallons or less. Tree limbs and brush will not be accepted as part of the free drop-off and will require a coupon.
Commercial lawn service companies can drop off leaves on behalf of a resident but must have a letter from the resident containing name, address and telephone number.
Before Jan. 2 and after Jan. 14, leaves may be dropped off using coupons.
Coupons area available for purchase online or at the Treasurer’s Office, Satellite Services, Freedom Park, the James City County Recreation Center and the James River Community Center. One coupon per four lawn and leaf-sized bags is required.
