Three CW Hotels Earn Conde Nast Gold in U.S.

Colonial Houses in Williamsburg are one of three area accommodations on the Conde Nast 2013 Gold List.

Five Virginia hotels made Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold List 2013 of the best places to stay in the United States, and three of those hotels are in Colonial Williamsburg.

Colonial Houses made the top of the Virginia list with a rating of 96.6 out of 100; Williamsburg Inn and Williamsburg Lodge are also on the list, along with Keswick Hall at Monticello and Kimpton’s Lorien Hotel and Spa in Alexandria.

“We are elated to see the properties at Colonial Williamsburg recognized for the excellence by Conde Nast 2013 Gold List,” said Bob Harris, senior vice president of tourism for the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance. “Conde Nast is recognized as one of the most celebrated global travel publications and inclusion in this prestigious list is indicative of the excellent lodging experience available at these [three] properties.”

Hotels on the list are scored by quality of rooms, service, food, location, design and activities. The 2013 list will be published in Conde Nast Traveler’s January issue.

In 1938, two houses on Francis Street in Colonial Williamsburg were opened for accommodations: the Quarter and the Orrell House. Now, Colonial Houses includes 26 houses ranging in size from one room to 16 rooms. In total, Colonial Houses offer accommodations for 75 people and some houses can accommodate parties of up to 32 people.

The Williamsburg Inn, which opened in April 1937, was built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. This year marked the 75th anniversary of the 62-room inn.

The Williamsburg Lodge opened in 1939 and was “constructed under the guidance of John D. Rockefeller Jr.,” according to a press release. The Lodge has 323 guest rooms as well as 45,000 total square feet of conference and banquet space including the 6,700-square foot Virginia Room.
