WILLIAMSBURG一Residents got their first public look Monday at plans to widen Ironbound Road and add a shared-use path, part of a $7.12 million project the city expects to complete by 2029.

The project would extend from Treyburn Drive to Middle Street, widening the roadway and adding a 10-foot shared-use path along the north side. Phase three would push west to Depue Drive, connecting to an existing path along that road.

At Treyburn Drive, the plan calls for upgraded traffic signals and a second eastbound left-turn lane toward Richmond Road to increase intersection capacity. Middle Street intersections would be limited to right-in/right-out access only.

Another phase of the project would extend Treyburn Drive west to Depue Drive and include improvements such as widening Ironbound Road to a three-lane section and a 10-foot shared-use path along the north side. The shared-use path would connect to the existing path along Depue Drive with hopes of enhancing pedestrian and bicycle connectivity within the surrounding transportation network.

The project is estimated to cost $7.12 million and the city will be reimbursed for the cost through the Virginia Department of Transportation’s SMART SCALE program. The project is expected to begin construction in summer 2028 and be completed by winter 2029.

The public comment period continues through June 26. Comments can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to the Municipal Building at 401 Lafayette St. Feedback will be presented to the city’s Public Works and Utilities Department. If the major design features are approved, the project will advance to final design.
